Kanchanaburi province is in the west of Thailand, 129 km from Bangkok and bordering Myanmar. It is the country's third largest province, after Nakhon Ratchasima and Chiang Mai. The province has long been famed for its Bridge over the River Kwai, known worldwide for its famous movie and the significant role that it played in the Second World War.

Thailand’s khon performance, which depicts the glory of Rama the hero and incarnation of the god Vishnu, was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity on 29th November 2018, where it is described as “a performing art that combines musical, vocal, literary, dance, ritual and handicraft elements.” (Source: Thailand’s Ministry of Culture)

Ayutthaya is one of the most famous historical and cultural cities in Thailand.  At the height of its prosperity in the 16th century, it was considered one of the biggest and wealthiest cities in the region. Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya was the first capital of the Thai kingdom after Sukhothai. In 1767, the city was attacked and burnt down by the invading Burmese army forcing the people to abandon the city, effectively bringing the long era of Ayutthaya to a close.
