The Rattanakosin
Island area is the formerly walled town surrounded
by waterways -- the Chao Phraya River and the
Old Moat -- and so known as the Old Town.
This section covers the areas of 'Inner
Rattanakosin' and 'Middle Rattanakosin' in
the map, marked with blue and pink colours
respectively (see the symbols indicating
the colours of the different areas in the
box on the lower part of the map). Situated
here are the Grand Palace, the Temple of
the Emerald Buddha, the Temple of the Reclining
Buddha and a few other famous Buddhist temples,
the Giant Swing and sections of the ancient
city walls.
The Chinatown area is located just to the
southeast of the Old Town in the 'Outer Rattanakosin'
area in the map, marked with green colour.
Major roads are Yaowarat, Chareon Krung, Song
Wat and Sampheng. It is an early settlement
of Chinese immigrants who were moved here from
the Old Town at the time of establishment of
Bangkok as the new capital. It is still a thriving
commercial area particularly well known for
its dozens of gold shops. |
