| Medicinal Properties
in Fruits |
The Thai people have long known the remedial properties
of many kinds of herbs and have put them in use, mostly for common ailments
and also in emergency. After the introduction of modern medicine at the
turn of this century, traditional Thai herbal medicine was somewhat neglected.
In recent years, however, there has been a revival of the study and use
of Thai medicinal plants. Researches have been conducted to prove their
efficacy and to assure the safety of using them. As a result, a number of
herbs have been recommended for use as primary health care. Some fruits
also have medicinal properties, which will be briefly introduced here.

Coconuts are plentiful
in Thailand. Its juice is a refreshing drink. Its flesh is cooked
in several types of dishes and desserts. Oil from the dried kernels
of well-matured coconuts can be applied to skin to cure ringworm. |
Although
watermelons are typically eaten as a fruit, Thai people popularly
use the young ones as a vegetable in a curry. Watermelon flesh helps
digestion and relieves internal heat while its seeds can cure an
infected urinary bladder. |
