Thailand is rich in plant and flower species. Some rare species like Mok Rachini or Wrightia Sirikitiae Mid.& Santisuk and Mahaphrom Rachini or Mitrephora Sirikitae Weerasuriya, Chalermglin & R.M.K. Saunders, can be found only here. And the fact that the grand flower exhibition "Royal Flora Ratchaphruek", held from 1 Nov 06 to 31 Jan 07, was given thumbs up by both domestic and foreign tourists served as a concrete evidence that Thailand is truly a paradise for flower lovers.

Blooming flowers, not only lift the feeling of their beholders, but are also tokens of success, rebirth and prosperity. To be in the embrace of beautiful blooming flowers can be a superb medicine for your body and mind. So it will be useful to give you brief information about some places to get pleasure from charming flowers in Thailand. Here are five choices for experience the beautiful flowers.

1. Krachiao Blossom at Pa (Forest) Hin Ngam, Chaiyaphum

Every year during the rainy season, especially in June and July, the Krachiao or curcuma blooms in abundance and carpets the forest in Pa Hin Ngam National Park with its mauve and pinkish colours.

Krachiao is in the ginger family and is widely found in Pa Hin Ngam National Park of Thep Sathit County, Chaiyaphum Province, 342 km northeast of Bangkok. The name Pa Hin Ngam means a forest with spectacular rock formations amidst the Krachiao fields. The rocks are in many different shapes resembling castles, animals and the FIFA World Cup.

You should not miss walking along the natural trail to the "end of the land" viewpoint which is a cliff at the edge of the mountain range. Standing there and looking down, you will get a fine panoramic view of the Central Plains and the Northeast.

When you arrive at Chai Badan County, continue driving on Highway 205. You will go past Sonthi Sub-county. Before getting near Thep Sathit County, turn left onto Highway 2354. Drive for 17 km and turn left onto an asphalt road. Go on for about 13 km. The park office will come in sight.

2. Blooming Mexican Sunflowers on Mount Mae U-kho, Mae Hong Son

In November when the cool breeze begins to blow, the green Mount Mae U-kho in Khun Yuam County, Mae Hong Son Province (924 km north of Bangkok), will turn golden as the Mexican sunflowers (Tithonia Diversifolia) blossom. During this period, if you travel from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son by Highway 108, you will be fascinated by a sea of golden Mexican sunflowers blooming along both sides of the road over the rolling hills for miles.

This wild flower, called buatong in the northern dialect, looks exactly like the sunflower but is much smaller. Annually, the Buatong Blooming Festival is held from November to December. Travellers are allowed to put up a tent near a buatong field to get as close as possible to the flowers in their cool natural surroundings.

3. Sunflower Roads in Saraburi and Lop Buri

In 1999, drought and low prices of maize forced farmers in Saraburi and Lop Buri (107 km and 153 km north of Bangkok respectively) to grow sunflowers as a commercial crop. From then on, the importance of the sunflower has been shown not only to trade, but also to the tourist industry. Up to the present, the area of sunflower fields has increased to about 500 sq. km. In the cool season (November-January), along the route of Muaklek-Wang Muang-Pasak Chonlasit Dam and the route of Lop Buri-Phattananikhom-Chaibadan, the blooming yellow sunflowers with the clear blue sky as a background create an impressive landscape. It is hard to resist the allure of this photogenic scene. The breathtaking view will urge you to rush to pose before the camera. What's more, products of sunflowers are sold at the fields and along the roads. You can have a great time shopping.
Apart from the sunflower fields, you should visit Pasak Chonlasit Dam, the largest and longest earth dam of Thailand with a length of 4,860 metres. It is part of the Pasak River Basin Development Project, which is a royal initiated project of H.M. King Bhumibol. During the Sunflower Blooming Festival (November-January), there is a train service running to the reservoir which commands a view of water stretching as far as the eye can see.
