On your visit to Thailand, you probably want to make the most of your trip to see all categories of its attractions; whether it is natural, architectural, historical or cultural. Some places are best visited during the day while some, at night. During the night-time in Thailand, you have plenty of activities to do. One of them is to watch shows ranging from cultural performances to cabarets.

BANGKOK

Thailand Cultural Centre Ratchadaphisek Road, Huai Khwang

This is an ideal place to view all forms of cultural performances, both national and international.

Symphony orchestra concerts are also held here regularly at night. Besides, the centre has a hall featuring a permanent exhibition (daytime) on the history of the Thai people, their lifestyles and culture.
Special recommendation: If you visit the place during the day, you should not miss going to the nearby Siam Niramit in the evening.

A magnificent show at Siam Niramit

Siam Niramit Thiam Ruam Mit Road, Huai Khwang

Experience the essence of Siam* at Siam Niramit. This world class spectacular features one of the largest stage productions in the world in its 2000-seat theatre. Here, Thailand's art and cultural heritage are shown by 150 performers with over 500 costumes and state-of-the-art special effects. This extravaganza presents to you three acts as follows:

1. Journey Back to History features four scenes: 1. Religious Faith--The Ancient Kingdom of Lanna 2. The South Sea--Trade from Overseas 3. Isan--Heritage of the Khmer Civilization 4. The Mighty Capital--Ayutthaya.
2. Journey Beyond Imagination: The Three Realms highlights scenes of fiery hell, the mythical Himmaphan Forest and blissful heaven.
3. Journey Through Joyous Festivals showcases Thai famous festivals such as Loi Krathong and Songkran.
Special recommendation: You should arrive there 1.30 hour before show time (8 p.m.). This is because you will be able to enjoy delicious Thai food at the buffet restaurant here and to leisurely spend time at the replicas of traditional houses of Thailand's four regions -- central, north, north-eastern and south.

At each house, you will meet people dressed traditionally according to their region. Besides, each house features outstanding local culture. For example, at the central house, there is a boat with a rower to take you along the criss-crossing canal. And at the north-eastern house, the weaving process is demonstrated. Please contact Siam Niramit for more information and reservations.

*The country had been called Siam until Field Marshal P. Pibulsonggram, the third Prime Minister (1938-1944) of Thailand changed her name into Thailand.

A khon performance at
Sala Chalermkrung

Sala Chalermkrung Royal Theatre Charoenkrung Road, Old Town

This is the first theatre in Southeast Asia to have an air-conditioning system and was the most modern and largest one at its opening time. Renovated in 1992, it is now a place for cultural performances like khon, the traditional Thai masked drama, and retro-concerts.

Joe Louis Theatre (Naatayasala Hun Lakorn Lek) Suanlum Night Bazaar, Rama IV Road

Here is the only place in Thailand to view hun lakorn lek, a show of Thai traditional small puppets, the last surviving art of its kind in the country.

Hun Lakorn Lek
(Thai traditional small puppets)

What attracts people's interest is the united smooth movements of the puppets, which must be credited to the puppeteers.
Amazingly, each puppet was manipulated by three persons: one controlling its head and left hand, one its feet and the other, its right hand. Recently, the Joe Louis Theatre's troupe has won the award for best traditional performance at the 2006 World Festival of Puppet Art in Prague, the Czech Republic.

Patravadi Theatre
Soi Wat Rakhang, Arun Amarin Road

Patravadi, Bangkok's first open-air theatre, is a renowned institution for performing arts. In 1992, the theatre was founded by Patravadi Mejudhon, a dynamic stage performer, script writer and theatre director- producer. Here, Thai folklore is brought to stage performance in Thai-contemporary style.
