Vetiver is known as a "miraculous grass" because it is very beneficial and versatile. Its feature lies in its function in soil and water conservation and erosion control.

His Majesty King Bhumibol is the first person in the country to recognize the value of vetiver. On 23 June 1991, he recommended that the plant be studied for utilization in soil and water conservation. Various organizations have since responded to the royal initiative and vetiver has been grown in all parts of the country.

The following characteristics enable vetiver to help conserve soil and water:
It can withstand drought and flood.
It can grow in all types of soil and is highly tolerant to toxins.
It has a strong fibrous root system that penetrates and binds the soil to a depth of three metres and it   protects soil from being washed off.
It possesses aromatic roots from which a fragrance can be extracted.

His Majesty as a Recipient of International Awards
International Merit Award:

His Majesty's role in using vetiver for soil and water conservation has been recognized internationally. On 25 February 1993, the International Erosion Control Association conferred its International Merit Award on His Majesty for assuming the exemplary role in the utilization of vetiver for soil and water conservation.

Award of Recognition: Another award was presented by the World Bank, the agency which has initiated R&D work on vetiver for more than a decade earlier. On 30 October 1993, Mr. Richard G. Grimshaw, the Chief of Agriculture Section, Asia Regional Technical Division of the World Bank and a vetiver expert himself, presented His Majesty with a specially commissioned bronze sculpture of a vetiver plant together with a certificate as the Award of Recognition "For technical and development accomplishment in the promotion of the vetiver technology internationally".
