Khung Kraben Bay
Royal Development Study Centre

By Sainamyen
Background

This is one among more than 3,000 development projects initiated by H.M. King Bhumibol. And like any other such projects, Khung Kraben Bay Royal Development Study Centre, which was established in 1981, aims not only to help alleviate the locals's well-being but also to sustainably keep coastal marine ecosystems in equilibrium. Part of its initial funds was from His Majesty's privy purse.

Since the study centre is situated on the coastal areas of Tha Mai County, Chanthaburi Province (245 km east of Bangkok), most implementation and sub-projects are related to the development of marine resources, environment and the locals' occupations such as giant tiger prawn and oyster farming.

The implementation

To sustainably develop and preserve the mangrove forests and environment here, the Department of Fisheries, in cooperation with several organizations, have closely monitored the operation of the sub-projects to control the level of solid wastes and organic debris including plankton produced by prawn farming.

Also, the centre publicizes the knowledge of coastal resource management and provides the locals with necessary training.

Besides coastal marine resource management, the centre also takes forest, soil and water preservation in the nearby highland into account. The centre set up a wildlife sanctuary and laid a path through it with the purpose of publicizing the knowledge of forest resource management and the propagation of vetiver, the miraculous grass playing a vital role in soil and water conservation.

In addition, a 1,600-metre stilted walkway was constructed meandering into the mangroves to enable those who are interested in studying nature to get a close touch with them. If you would like to make a trip to study the implementation at the centre, its 'development tour' is available for you.

For more information, please contact the centre on tel: +66 (0) 3936 9216-8, fax:+66 (0) 3936 9219.
Special thanks to TAT Central Office Region 3 for arranging a trip to the centre.
