Huai Hong Khrai Royal Development Study Centre was established under the royal initiative on December 11, 1982 in the area of Khun Mae Kuang National Forest Reserve, Chiang Mai Province. It covers approximately 8,500 rai (1,360 hectares). H.M. King Bhumibol realized that the area which used to have abundant forests and natural resources was deteriorating. His Majesty thus ordered to have the study centre set up with objectives to conduct study research and experimentation on appropriate development methods which suited the development needs of the Northern Region, especially on the conservation of watersheds, reforestation and agricultural development.

Huai Hong Khrai Centre has five Branches which are:

1. Royal-initiated Fruit and Flower Propagation Development Service Centre at Ban Rai, Hang Dong County, Chiang Mai Province: involving occupational training and promotion for the local people by propagating and distributing flower and fruit trees.

2. Royal-initiated Ping Sub-Basin Integrated Development Project, Hod and Chom Thong Counties, Chiang Mai Province and Ban Hong County, Lamphun Province: serving as a place for development of water sources and the construction of check dams in the watershed areas to nourish the forests and supply water for agricultural activities and consumption.

3. Royal-initiated Khun Mae Kuang Forest Area Development Project, Doi Saket County, Chiang Mai Province: involving systematic management of water basins together with provision of land for the local people, and reforestation in the destroyed areas in an attempt to restore watersheds.

4. Doi Tung Development Project, Mae Fah Luang County, Chiang Rai Province: aiming at promoting coexistence between man and forest by using effective management in order to restore, preserve and develop the natural resources and the environment.

5. Royal-initiated Huai Lan Area Development Project, San Kamphaeng County, Chiang Mai Province: involving the distribution of water supply to agricultural areas and the establishment of forest and fishery stations.

Since its establishment, Huai Hong Khrai Royal Development Study Centre has conducted various studies and activities. One highly beneficial result is that of the forestry study project which has served to improve the environment in the Centre area, reduce forest fires, and produce a moist climate particularly in the forest development areas.

In addition, the Centre also provides the people in the surrounding villages with services in various fields, such as supporting animal husbandry activities and plant seeds, and giving advice and guidance on techniques which farmers and other people in the surrounding villages can adopt and apply to their daily occupations.

The implementation of the Centre had been so fruitful and outstanding that on 15 June 2006, following the auspicious moment of the Sixtieth Anniversary Celebrations of His Majesty King Bhumibol's Accession to the Throne, Their Majesties King Letsie III and Queen Masenate Mohato Seeiso of the Kingdom of Lesotho paid a royal visit to Huai Hong Khrai Royal Development Study Centre to study the work there in order to apply the knowledge to the development of Their Majesties' country.
