His Majesty King Bhumibol is probably the only head of state of the world known to have initiated thousands of developmental projects for his or her country. His Majesty is a most travelled king; during his 60 years' long reign he has visited even the remotest corners of the country and so realised well what miseries his subjects have been through. That was how those development projects came about.

HM the King always does everything
by himself even growing plants.

Since 1982, there have been more than 3,000 Royal Development Projects under the responsibility of the Office of the Royal Development Projects Board. These projects are mainly divided into seven categories, viz. Water Sources, Agriculture, Occupational Promotion, Public Health, Public Welfare, Environment and Communications.

Among the total number of the Royal Development Projects, those concerning water sources development outnumber the others, followed by agricultural development projects. Agriculture has been the basic occupation of the Thai people since ancient times. Approximately, two thirds of the nation's work force are in agriculture. Therefore, the development of agriculture has always been an important aim of the development of the nation, and is significantly included in all of the National Economic & Social Development Plans.

HM the King has visited even the remotest areas of
the country to alleviate his people's suffering.

Development of water sources for cultivation and irrigation is indispensable and beneficial to the majority of the country's population in that it enables them to produce crops all year round.Other development projects are no less important than these two areas. In occupational promotion, especially for farmers, His Majesty emphasises on self-reliance and integrated farming to lessen risks of having to depend solely on a single crop.

Regarding public health, His Majesty believes that good physical health will lead to good mental health which will be beneficial in social and economic development of the country. Besides, the Royal Development Projects concerning public welfare provide assistance for the farmers in terms of general livelihood and occupational support. Most of those regarding environment emphasise on conservation and improvement of the natural resources and the environment. And those regarding communications involve the improvement of roads in the rural and underdeveloped areas.
