Hearing Loss

Hearing loss is not strictly associated with old age. Hearing impairment does not prohibit one from being participating fully in everyday activities.
Age-related hearing loss, has indeed very little to do with old age. In fact, already from the age of 40, our hearing slowly but surely begins to deteriorate. One person is afflicted earlier, another somewhat later. Prolonged exposure to continuous or shock-type noise (on the job, discos, detonations, low-flying airplanes etc.) can cause irreparable damage to the hair cells of the inner ear even at an earlier age.

Another phenomenon is sudden loss of hearing. Together with ringing in the ears or the feeling of pressure, the hearing ability - usually on one side and fully without warning - is suddenly reduced nearly to deafness. This stress-induced disorder occurs mostly in the morning. It is cause to go immediately to an ENT doctor, who can diagnose the problem and initiate measures against it.

Stress can also be the cause of one-sided noise in the ear (tinnitus), with attacks of dizziness. Pressure and a "full" feeling in the ear are then experienced.

Types of Hearing Loss

Every individual has a unique hearing ability. Not two people have exactly the same hearing loss. Work-place noise, inherited medical conditions, childhood and adult illness all have to be combined to produce different types of hearing loss in different people.
There are three different types of hearing loss:

Conductive hearing loss is caused by injury to, or problems with, the bones, eardrum and membranes, which carry sound from the external ear through the middle ear to the inner ear. This hearing loss can usually be treated medically or surgically. In some cases a hearing instrument can provide sufficient hearing improvement.

Sensorineural hearing loss (also known as nerve deafness) affects the inner ear or neural pathways. It occurs when the bones, eardrum and membranes are intact but the inner ear deteriorates as the result of causes that can include the aging process or degeneration of nerves leading from the inner ear to the brain. In these cases, sound is transmitted normally through the outer and middle ears, but the inner ear is less efficient in transmitting this sound. This leads to reduced perception of sound intensity and quality. The result is an impaired ability to hear sound and to understand speech.

Mixed hearing loss combines elements from both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.

What To Do

When a permanent hearing loss becomes apparent, you should visit the ENT doctor first to rule out physiological alterations which would make an operation necessary, classify the hearing loss as a sound perception hearing loss and decide whether a hearing instrument is necessary. If a hearing loss is determined which can be corrected with a hearing instrument, the patient is generally referred to a hearing health care professional.

The hearing health care professional will conduct a hearing test on the patient and select a most suitable hearing instrument based on the requirement of the patient and his budget.

S800   Life
The only open ear solution with e2e wireless™
Subtle look
S800 Life is a hearing instrument you can wear with confidence. Its sleek ergonomic design is barely noticeable. And, its natural colors blend easily with hair and skin tones. There’s no earhook or visible controls, just an ultra-thin tubing that’s virtually invisible.

You won’t even notice that you're wearing S800 Life because of its open fitting approach. Instead of using a conventional ear mold which closes the ear canal completely, S800 Life utilizes the comfortably soft LifeTip to help reduce the bothersome occlusion effect - the echo or plugged up feeling.

S800 Life instruments are available in a range of subtle colors. For those seeking a style with more personality, a sleek silver housing is available as well as a range of translucent colors. Whatever colors you choose, you’ll benefit from unsurpassed comfort, cosmetic appeal and acoustic performance.

Knockout performance - The S800 advantage
S800 Life's superior design is just the beginning. What truly distinguishes it from other open ear instruments is the S800 technology. It enables unsurpassed auditory performance through a range of engineering advancements, including e2e wirless, adaptive high speed feedback cancellation, adaptive noise reduction and adaptive speech enhancement, to name but a few. All these high-end features help S800 Life to recognize the daily challenges of your listening environment and to react in an intelligent way - for your personal hearing comfort and understanding.

Easy to use
Operating your S800 Life instrument couldn't be simpler. There are no controls on the instrument to fiddle with. Instead, S800 Life offers an optional ePocket™remote. This small, discreet device puts complete control of the instrument at your fingertips. And, it has convenient readouts for volume setting, program number, and battery status. In spite of its small housing size, S800 Life comes with a 312 battery. This means longer battery life - up to 140 hours. That’s twice as long as some other open ear solutions. The S800 Life fitting process is fast and easy, too. All it takes is one visit with your Hearing Care Professional. In record time, you’ll be enjoying the remarkable performance S800 Life delivers.

S800 Life is the right choice for people with

mild to moderate hearing loss (hearing loss in the range of 25dB to 50dB)

high-frequency loss. This is decrease in hearing sensitivity associated with aging. Afflicted individuals still have normal hearing for a large portion of the speech signal, but because of the importance of high-frequency speech cues, they have a significant communication problem, especially understanding speech in the presence of background noise. They complain: "I can hear, but I can’t understand." To fit these individuals with a hearing instrument is challenging and only possible with a high-end instrument like S800 Life. Why? Because the portion of the speech they still can hear may not be amplified, as the sound impression then would be too loud. The advanced S800 technology ensures perfect adjustment and amplification of sounds where necessary. However, in the speech frequencies where hearing is normal, no amplification is applied.
