Don
Muang Airport
Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited
or AOT
Don Muang International
Airport is located on 222 Vibhavadi Rangsit Road (about
25 km north of downtown). It was officially opened as
a Royal Thai Air Force base on 27 March 1914 and had
been used for commercial flights since 1924. By passenger
volume, it was one of Asia’s busiest airports.
After the opening of Suvarnabhumi International Airport
on 28 September 2006, Don Muang Airport became a facility
for military and civil aviation. Due to the leap growth
in numbers of low-cost airlines’ passengers at
the new Suvarnabhumi Airport, the Thai government decided
to operate two airports instead of expanding the new
one. In response to that, Don Muang Airport was re-opened
to serve some domestic commercial
flights on 25 March 2007.

Between terminals in Don Muang
Airport.
3 . Taxis
There is an airport taxi booth just outside the arrivals
building where you can hire a legal taxi-metre. Most
destinations in downtown Bangkok cost around 200-250
baht. Besides the metre fare, there are also an airport
surcharge of 50 baht and a toll of 30 or 40 baht if
taking a tollway. Don’t pay attention to any fraudulent
taxi drivers who try to approach you as they are not
licensed to carry passengers at the airport.
4. Air-con & Regular Public Buses
Though the fare of air-con buses
is much cheaper than the airport buses it is
quite possible that the seats are fully occupied, especially
during rush hours. There are five routes going from
the airport to different main areas in Bangkok as follows:
Regular buses:
Route 29 Airport – Bangkok Railway Station (Hua
Lamphong)
Route 59 Airport – The Emerald Buddha Temple (Sanam
Luang)
Route 95 Airport – Ram Indra Rd. – Ramkhamhaeng
Rd.
Air-con buses:
Route 4 Airport – Silom Rd.
Route 29 Airport – Victory Monument – Bangkok
Railway Station (Hua Lamphong)
Route 10 Airport – Victory Monument – Southern
Region Bus Terminal
Route 13 Airport – Sukhumvit Rd. – Eastern
Region Bus Terminal
Please note that there are some extra buses bearing
the same route number, which do not cover the whole
distance, so it is advisable to check with the bus conductor
first.
You should also ask for a copy of Thaiways Map of Bangkok
from any of the following counters at the international
arrival lounge, i.e counters of Thai Airways, Thai Hotel
Association, Airport Authority of Thailand, Tourism
Authority of Thailand (TAT) or counters at the domestic
departure lounge or TG/VIP departure lounge, before
trying to use a bus, so you’ll have a rough idea
where to get off.
In additon, there are many non air-con buses in service,
with cheap fares depending on the bus type. Anyway,
you are not recommended to use either type of these
buses because they are mostly very crowded and inconvenient,
particularly for new visitors and those with belongings.
5. Train
You can also get into Bangkok from the airport by train.
The Don Muang Station is located across the highway
and opposite Amari Airport Hotel. The trains arrive
and depart from the airport station about every 30-60
minutes, but at longer intervals on weekends. Normally,
it takes about an hour or more during rush hours to
reach Hua Lamphong, the main station in central Bangkok.
For more information,
please contact the booth of Tourism Authority of Thailand or the Airport Information Booth at either terminal.
